Experience

To earn the CFP® credential after successful completion of the CFP Examination, candidates must also meet a work experience requirement. Candidates who qualified for the CFP Examination as a result of completing an FPSC-approved Education Program must complete two years of personal financial planning related work experience for compensation. Qualifying experience may be earned within a five year period that is prior to, concurrent with, or subsequent to the education and examination requirements.

However, experience earned more than five years prior to or five years subsequent to writing the CFP Examination is not normally acceptable.

Candidates who qualify for the CFP Examination through the Approved Prior Credentials policy must meet a three-year work experience requirement prior to applying for the CFP Examination.
