Financial Health Check-ups

During Financial Planning Week (October 5-12) CFP® professionals across Canada will be offering financial planning health check-ups in their local communities. These check-ups will be held at shopping centres, clubs, libraries, hospitals, schools and other venues across Canada.

Your financial planning health check-up will introduce you to financial planning and why it’s important, give you some context to help you decide what actions you should take in regards to your personal finances, and let you know what to look for when seeking a professional to help you meet your goals.

Why CFP professionals?

Financial planning is not regulated in most Canadian provinces. This means that anyone can call themselves a "financial planner". Not everyone who refers to themselves as a planner is indeed qualified; many so-called financial planners are licensed to sell products but have no financial planning training or expertise. In the absence of government regulation, consumers must ensure their planner is indeed trained, certified, and held accountable in providing professional financial planning.

Canadians seeking competent and ethical financial planning services should look for the Certified Financial Planner® mark. CFP® professionals are the largest identifiable body of licensed financial planners in Canada with over 17,500 individuals meeting FPSC's strict standards.

CFP certification provides assurance that the planner is committed to internationally-recognized professional standards of competence, ethics and practice as set and enforced in Canada by FPSC. Standards include: completion of a thorough education in financial planning, successful completion of a rigorous standardized national examination, financial planning-related work experience and an ethical commitment to putting the client's interest first. CFP professionals are also held to ongoing rigorous standards through FPSC's continuing education requirements and enforcement processes.

This is why Financial Planning Health Check-ups are being held by CFP professionals. To learn more about CFP certification, visit the FPSC website.
